DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

Since the inception of the college in 1992, the Department of Philosophy has been a cornerstone of intellectual inquiry, offering students a profound exploration of timeless questions and enduring ideas. From its earliest days, the department has been dedicated to fostering a deep engagement with philosophical thought, nurturing minds and spirits alike. The department’s journey began with the introduction of the pass course, laying the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of philosophy’s rich tapestry. From the study of classical texts to contemporary debates, students were provided with a robust framework for grappling with the fundamental questions that have preoccupied humanity for centuries. However, it was in 2014 that a significant milestone was reached with the inception of the Honors course, elevating the depth and rigor of philosophical education offered by the department. Despite its modest size, comprising three dedicated faculty members, the department has consistently upheld a commitment to academic excellence and intellectual curiosity. Through a diverse array of courses and seminars, students are exposed to a broad spectrum of philosophical traditions and methodologies, encouraging critical thinking and reflective inquiry. Whether exploring the metaphysical conundrums of existence, the ethical dilemmas of human conduct, or the epistemological foundations of knowledge, students are challenged to grapple with ideas that transcend disciplinary boundaries and resonate across cultures and epochs.

Moreover, the department serves as a vibrant intellectual community, where students and faculty engage in lively debates, dialogues, and discussions. Beyond the confines of the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as philosophical forums, reading groups, and guest lectures, providing opportunities for intellectual enrichment and camaraderie. In addition to its academic endeavors, the department is committed to fostering a culture of philosophical inquiry that extends beyond the university campus. Through outreach programs, public lectures, and community engagement initiatives, faculty members seek to promote philosophical literacy and civic dialogue, encouraging individuals to reflect critically on the values and principles that underpin their lives and societies. In essence, the Department of Philosophy stands as a beacon of intellectual inquiry and contemplative reflection within the college. Its journey, spanning decades, is a testament to the enduring relevance of philosophical thought in an ever-changing world. By instilling in students a passion for questioning, a commitment to truth-seeking, and a reverence for the life of the mind, the department continues to shape hearts and minds, inspiring a deeper understanding of ourselves, our world, and our place within it.
