DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

Since its inception alongside the college in 1992, the Department of Economics has stood as a cornerstone of academic excellence. It has been an integral part of the institution’s journey, witnessing growth and evolution over the years. However, it was in the academic session of 2014-2015 that a significant milestone was achieved with the introduction of the Honors course by the department. This marked a pivotal moment, enhancing the scope and depth of economic education offered to students. The department’s curriculum and pedagogy reflect a conscientious effort towards nurturing a profound understanding of the socio-economic landscape, particularly focusing on the nuanced challenges prevalent in North-East India, with a special emphasis on the Barak Valley region. This strategic approach underscores the department’s commitment to addressing real-world issues and fostering solutions that are not only academically rigorous but also socially relevant. North-East India, with its unique cultural tapestry and economic complexities, presents a rich canvas for academic exploration. The region’s socio-economic fabric is interwoven with diverse factors, including geographic remoteness, ethnic diversity, infrastructural limitations, and historical legacies. By directing scholarly attention towards understanding these dynamics, the Department of Economics equips students with insights essential for navigating the intricacies of development policy and practice in the region.

Moreover, the focus on the Barak Valley specifically acknowledges the local context and its significance within the broader socio-economic narrative of North-East India. Situated in the southern part of the region, the Barak Valley presents its own set of challenges and opportunities, ranging from agricultural sustainability to industrial development and socio-cultural dynamics. By delving deep into the socio-economic fabric of this region, students are empowered to engage with local stakeholders, identify pressing issues, and devise contextually grounded interventions. Beyond the confines of the classroom, the department fosters a culture of research and community engagement. Faculty members actively pursue research agendas that contribute to the body of knowledge on North-East India’s socio-economic landscape. Through collaborations with local organizations, policymakers, and communities, students are provided with avenues for applying theoretical insights to real-world scenarios, thereby bridging the gap between academia and practice. In essence, the Department of Economics stands as a beacon of academic excellence and social responsibility within the college. Its journey, spanning over decades, has been marked by a steadfast commitment to holistic education and scholarly inquiry. By nurturing a generation of economists equipped with both theoretical acumen and practical insights, the department continues to make meaningful contributions to the socio-economic development of North-East India, particularly the Barak Valley region.
